Freedom Middle School Technology Expectations

Teachers will expect students to have their computer with them and ready to use at all times. Misuse of the computer will result disciplinary action.


1. Be respectful
  • Respect yourself by using the MacBook appropriately
  • Respect staff by staying on task in class
  • Respect your parents by not embarrassing them with your behavior
  • Respect other students by not touching their computers or attempting to access their information or accounts.


2. The laptop, its case, and its components must be maintained in clean condition and good working order at all times.
  • Keep foods/liquids away from the MacBook – even when outside of school
  • Laptops are not allowed in the MPR during lunch
  • Avoid pets, children, and messy substances
  • Notify your Excel teacher ASAP if anything goes wrong


3. All district markings must be kept in tact and in plain view
  • Name Tags (on case and lid)
  • Asset Tags (on bottom)
  • Covering, removing or attempting to remove tags from the laptop is a violation of your user agreements and will be considered vandalism.
  • Notify your Excel teacher if they become damaged or start to peel off

4. Use the assigned MacBook and passwords only
  • Never touch another student’s computer
  • Never allow another student to use your assigned computer
  • Never share passwords
  • Never log in using another’s password
  • Report any violations immediately
  • ANY STUDENT ENGANGING IN THE ABOVE INNAPROPRIATE BEHAVIORS WILL BE ISSUED THE MAXIMUM DISCIPLINARY ACTION.

5. The MacBook is provided for instructional use only
  • File sharing is never allowed using District 100 hardware or network
  • Chatting and email are only allowed using the provided District 100 email
  • Only approved pre-installed games and other recreational uses are allowed on District 100 hardware or network
  • Only the software provided on the computer is allowed (Attempting to modify/install other software is a punishable offense. It is trespassing/vandalism and will be dealt with very seriously.)

6. The laptop, network and their contents are property of District 100
  • Keep all content appropriate
  • Any staff member or your parent can inspect the computer and network at any time
  • Don’t download images, videos, music, or any other files that are not part of an assignment
  • All electronic communications are recorded and may be reviewed by District 100 staff at any time

7. Use the computer as directed by staff
  • It is each student’s responsibility to be on-task and pay attention in class
  • If you finish assignments early, find an appropriate way to use the MacBook
  • Just because something isn’t blocked doesn’t make it school appropriate
  • It is your responsibility to report any school inappropriate sites you are aware of

8. Print only when required
  • Print only final copies of assignments
  • Edit documents in electronic format when possible
  • Teacher permission is required before printing
  • Print web pages and other research documentation to PDF for later review.

9. Keep computer mute unless sound is required for assignments
  • Headphones are not allowed unless you are directed by staff to use them
  • iTunes is not to be used during the school day unless essential for a project
  • F10 to Mute

10. Handle the computer gently
  • Never force keys, plugs, jacks, etc.
  • Always carry the computer in the case provided to you
  • Always carry the case with the strap across your chest in crossing guard fashion
  • Never bang, slam, or otherwise abuse computer
  • Damage or loss resulting from gross neglect will result in disciplinary action
  • Intentional damage to the computer will result in disciplinary action

11. Private info is to be kept private
  • Never use the computer to publish private information about yourself or others:
    • Photos, Names, Addresses, Personal behaviors/habits

12. Keep yourself charged
  • Keep the charger at home
  • Remove laptop from its case and plug it in each night (minimum - 4 hours)
  • Report rapid discharge to the technology department
  • Follow tips mentioned earlier to keep the MacBook charged

13. Back up all documents daily
  • Each day you should back up all files you’ve modified
  • Drag folders individually to your server home directory
  • Music, movies, and non-instructional files may not be backed up
  • Maintain enough space on the server to back up your school work daily (2 GB limit)


REMEMBER ALWAYS SEEK OUT YOUR EXCEL TEACHER IF YOU
